Stratospheric ozone depletion : The thinning of ozone in the stratosphere, driven chiefly by chlorine- and bromine-containing compounds. Ultraviolet light releases chlorine from this compound, which then participates in ozone-destroying reactions.
Vapor degreasing : A cleaning process that uses solvent vapor to remove oils and residues from manufactured parts. This was a major use of 1,1,1-trichloroethane in industrial parts cleaning.
