1-dimensional systems (physics)

A physical system whose relevant spatial structure or motion is confined to one dimension. Such systems often expose effects of interactions and fluctuations that are obscured in higher dimensions.

Luttinger liquid: A universal low-energy description of interacting particles in one dimension, where collective density waves replace ordinary quasiparticles. It describes gapless one-dimensional conductors whose interactions reshape their low-energy excitations.
One-dimensional lattice: A periodic arrangement of sites along a single spatial direction. Lattice models isolate how geometry and restricted motion shape one-dimensional behavior.
Transverse-field Ising model: A spin model with Ising interactions along a chain and a competing transverse magnetic field. Its chain has an exactly tractable quantum critical point and illustrates competing order and fluctuations.

Spin chain: A sequence of quantum spins coupled primarily to neighboring spins along a line. Spin chains are canonical systems for studying quantum correlations in one dimension.
XXZ model: A spin-½ chain with different interaction strengths parallel and perpendicular to a preferred axis. Its phases and excitations provide a standard map of one-dimensional quantum magnetism.
Three-dimensional systems (physics): Physical systems whose relevant spatial structure or motion extends through three dimensions. Higher-dimensional systems generally permit kinds of long-range order that fluctuations suppress in one dimension.
Quantum wire: A narrow conductor in which carriers are confined in two directions and move along one. It provides an electronic realization of one-dimensional transport and interaction effects.
