13th Dalai Lama

Thubten Gyatso (1876–1933) was Tibet’s spiritual and political leader from 1895 until his death. He strengthened Tibetan autonomy and introduced reforms amid pressure from the British Empire and Qing China.

Tibetan Declaration of Independence: A 1913 proclamation in which the 13th Dalai Lama asserted Tibet’s independence from China. It gave public expression to the sovereignty he pursued after returning from exile.
Thubten Gyatso: The personal name of the 13th Dalai Lama, who led Tibet from 1895 to 1933. This is the name he bore before and beyond his religious title.
Dorzhiev: A Buryat Buddhist monk and diplomat who served as an adviser to the 13th Dalai Lama. He helped build diplomatic ties with Russia during the British advance into Tibet.
British expedition to Tibet: A British military and diplomatic invasion of Tibet in 1903–1904, led by Francis Younghusband. The invasion forced him to flee Lhasa and exposed Tibet to British pressure.
Tibetan government: The institutions that governed Tibet, centered historically on the Dalai Lama and officials in Lhasa. He led this government and strengthened its capacity during his rule.
Tibetan Army: The armed forces maintained by the Tibetan government to defend its territory and authority. He expanded and modernized the army as part of strengthening Tibet’s defenses.
Dalai Lama: The title of the spiritual leader of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, traditionally regarded as a reincarnation lineage. His authority and succession belonged to this institution.
Francis Younghusband: A British army officer who led the 1903–1904 expedition to Tibet. His expedition drove the Dalai Lama into exile in Mongolia.
Convention of Lhasa: The 1904 agreement imposed on Tibet by Britain after the Younghusband expedition. It was concluded while he was absent and constrained Tibet’s relations with Britain.
Ganden Phodrang: The Tibetan government established by the Fifth Dalai Lama in the seventeenth century. This was the political institution through which he governed Tibet.
