1911 Revolution

The 1911 Revolution overthrew China’s Qing dynasty and led to the Republic of China’s establishment in 1912. It ended more than two millennia of imperial rule.

Wuchang Uprising: The October 1911 revolt in Wuchang that triggered the nationwide uprising against Qing rule. Its outbreak turned revolutionary plans into an expanding political crisis.
Late Qing reforms: A program of political, educational, military, and administrative changes launched by the Qing dynasty after 1901. Their limited concessions and uneven implementation alienated groups the court hoped to retain.
Huang Xing: A leading Chinese revolutionary and military organizer who helped establish the Republic of China. He commanded revolutionary forces and worked alongside Sun Yat-sen during the upheaval.
Republic of China: A state founded in 1912 after the Qing dynasty’s collapse, first governing mainland China and later Taiwan. Its establishment was the revolution’s defining political outcome.
New Army: The modernized military forces created by the Qing dynasty in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Revolutionary sympathies among soldiers helped make the Wuchang revolt possible.
Boxer Protocol: The 1901 agreement that imposed indemnities and other obligations on China after the Boxer Uprising. Its costs intensified resentment toward the Qing government and foreign powers.
Li Yuanhong: A Qing military officer who became provisional vice president of the Republic of China in 1912. His selection as the Wuchang rebels’ leader helped broaden support beyond committed revolutionaries.
Xinhai Revolution: The Chinese name for the 1911 Revolution, derived from the sexagenary year in which it began. The name places the uprising within China’s traditional calendrical system.
Provincial assemblies: Representative bodies established in Qing provinces during constitutional reforms in the early twentieth century. Their leaders declared provincial independence as Qing authority collapsed.
Tongmenghui: A revolutionary organization founded in 1905 by Chinese opponents of Qing rule, including Sun Yat-sen. It coordinated anti-Qing activism and helped spread revolutionary ideas before 1911.
