1949 Armistice Agreements

The agreements Israel and neighboring Arab states signed in 1949 to end the main fighting of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. They established ceasefire lines but did not settle permanent borders or resolve the conflict.

Green Line (Israel): The armistice demarcation lines established between Israel and its neighbors in 1949, commonly called the Green Line. These lines marked the military positions fixed by the agreements without becoming permanent international borders.
1948 Arab–Israeli War: The war fought between Israel and Arab states and forces from 1947 to 1949 following the end of British rule in Palestine. The armistices formalized the end of its main interstate fighting.
Palestinian refugee: A person displaced from their home in Palestine during the 1948 war and its aftermath, and their descendants under common usage. The agreements stopped major fighting but did not resolve refugees’ claims to return or compensation.
Israel–Egypt Peace Treaty: The 1979 treaty in which Egypt and Israel ended their state of war and established peaceful relations. Unlike the 1949 armistice, it was a formal peace treaty and led to Israel’s withdrawal from Sinai.
Israel–Egypt Armistice Agreement: The 1949 agreement that ended fighting between Israel and Egypt and established an armistice line in Gaza and the Negev. It was the first of the four agreements and set the pattern for separate bilateral arrangements.
United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine: The 1947 United Nations proposal to divide British Mandatory Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states, with an internationalized Jerusalem. The war that followed the plan’s rejection and acceptance created the territorial realities negotiated in 1949.
Jerusalem: A city in the southern Levant sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and claimed as a capital by Israelis and Palestinians. The Israel–Jordan armistice line divided the city, leaving its political status unsettled.
Israel–Jordan Peace Treaty: The 1994 treaty establishing peace and diplomatic relations between Israel and Jordan. It replaced the 1949 ceasefire framework with recognized bilateral peace and a boundary agreement.
Israel–Jordan Armistice Agreement: The 1949 agreement that ended fighting between Israel and Transjordan and established armistice lines, including in Jerusalem. Its lines divided Jerusalem and shaped the West Bank’s status until 1967.
Ralph Bunche: An American diplomat who mediated the 1949 Arab–Israeli armistice negotiations for the United Nations. Bunche organized the negotiations that produced the separate agreements and received the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize.
