Knowra 1I/ʻOumuamua 1I/ʻOumuamua 1I/ʻOumuamua is the first confirmed interstellar object detected passing through the Solar System. Discovered in 2017, it followed a hyperbolic path and was observed only briefly as it receded from the Sun.
Hyperbolic trajectory : An unbound orbital path with eccentricity greater than one, allowing an object to pass through a planetary system and escape. ʻOumuamua’s strongly hyperbolic orbit showed it was not gravitationally bound to the Sun.
Pan-STARRS : A wide-field astronomical survey system in Hawaii that repeatedly images the sky to detect moving and changing objects. The Pan-STARRS1 telescope discovered ʻOumuamua during its survey observations.
ʻOumuamua's shape : The object's inferred form, estimated from its changing brightness as it rotated during observations. Its extreme brightness variation led to early depictions of a long, narrow body, though the exact shape is unknown.
Comet : A small Solar System body rich in volatile ices that can develop a coma and tail when heated by the Sun. ʻOumuamua’s lack of a visible coma made its classification as an ordinary comet uncertain.
Interstellar object detection : The astronomical methods used to find and characterize objects entering a planetary system from interstellar space. Faster detection could provide longer observation windows and more direct measurements than ʻOumuamua allowed.
Light curve : A record of an object's brightness over time, used to infer rotation, shape, and changing surface conditions. ʻOumuamua’s large brightness variations suggested an unusually elongated or irregular shape.
Solar System : The Sun and the gravitationally bound objects that orbit it, including planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. ʻOumuamua crossed this system but was not bound to the Sun.
ʻOumuamua's rotation : The changing orientation and rotational state inferred from ʻOumuamua's brightness variations. Its complex tumbling motion complicated attempts to infer a unique shape from the light curve.
Asteroid : A small rocky or metallic body orbiting the Sun, generally lacking the volatile-driven activity of a comet. Its apparently inactive surface invited an asteroid-like interpretation despite its interstellar trajectory.
Interstellar object population : The abundance, size distribution, and physical diversity of objects moving between star systems. One brief encounter cannot establish how common ʻOumuamua-like bodies are.
