2-Butyne

2-Butyne is a four-carbon alkyne with the structure CH₃C≡CCH₃ and molecular formula C₄H₆. Its triple bond lies between the two middle carbon atoms.

Alkyne: An unsaturated hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon triple bond. 2-Butyne is a specific internal member of this hydrocarbon family.
Butyne: An alkyne with four carbon atoms and one carbon–carbon triple bond. 2-Butyne is the positional isomer whose triple bond begins at carbon two.
Oxidation of alkynes: The cleavage or functionalization of carbon–carbon triple bonds by oxidizing reagents. Oxidative cleavage of 2-butyne produces two molecules of acetic acid under suitable conditions.
2-Butene: A four-carbon alkene with a double bond between the second and third carbon atoms. Replacing 2-butyne’s triple bond with a double bond changes geometry and reactivity.
sp hybridization: A bonding arrangement in which one s and one p orbital form two sp orbitals. Each triple-bonded carbon in 2-butyne uses sp hybridization.
But-1-yne: A four-carbon terminal alkyne with a triple bond between carbon one and carbon two. It is the other unbranched positional isomer of butyne.
Acetic acid: A two-carbon carboxylic acid with formula CH₃COOH. It is the characteristic carboxylic-acid product of strong oxidative cleavage of 2-butyne.
Butane: A saturated four-carbon hydrocarbon with molecular formula C₄H₁₀. It is the fully hydrogenated counterpart of 2-butyne.
Cis–trans isomerism: Geometric isomerism arising when restricted rotation gives distinct spatial arrangements around a bond. The triple bond prevents 2-butyne from having the cis–trans isomers possible for 2-butene.
Molecular formula: A notation showing the number of atoms of each element in a molecule. C₄H₆ gives 2-butyne’s elemental composition without specifying its connectivity.
