2014 Hong Kong protests

A wave of demonstrations in Hong Kong in 2014 demanding genuine universal suffrage for choosing the city’s chief executive. The movement became known internationally as the Umbrella Movement.

Basic Law of Hong Kong: Hong Kong’s constitutional document, adopted in 1990 and effective from 1997. Its provisions on electoral reform framed the protesters’ demands and Beijing’s authority.
Occupy Central with Love and Peace: A Hong Kong civil-disobedience campaign advocating universal suffrage through nonviolent occupation of Central. Its planned campaign helped set the stage for the 2014 occupations.
Joshua Wong: A Hong Kong student activist who became a prominent figure in the 2014 demonstrations. His role in student mobilization made him one of the movement’s most visible young leaders.

Class boycott: A coordinated refusal by students to attend classes as a form of protest. Student boycotts helped turn electoral demands into mass street action.
Alex Chow: A Hong Kong student activist and former secretary-general of the Hong Kong Federation of Students. He helped lead the student boycott that preceded the occupations.
Mong Kok: A densely populated commercial district in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Its occupation brought the protests into a busy neighborhood beyond the central government district.
Demosistō: A Hong Kong political organization founded in 2016 by activists associated with the Umbrella Movement. It carried some movement activists’ political work into electoral and organizational politics.
