28 May 1926 coup d’état

A military coup that overthrew Portugal’s First Republic and began a dictatorship that eventually became the Estado Novo.

First Portuguese Republic: Portugal’s republican regime from 1910 until the military coup of 1926. Its unstable governments and political conflict created the conditions the coup leaders exploited.
Gomes da Costa: A Portuguese general who led the military revolt that began in Braga on 28 May 1926. He became the revolt’s principal military leader as it advanced toward Lisbon.
