2MASS

The Two Micron All-Sky Survey mapped the entire sky in three near-infrared bands, producing a catalog of hundreds of millions of celestial sources.

J band: A near-infrared photometric band centered near 1.25 micrometers. One of 2MASS’s three bands, sensitive to relatively short near-infrared wavelengths.
2MASS All-Sky Point Source Catalog: A catalog of point-like sources detected by the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. It is the survey’s principal catalog for stars and other unresolved infrared sources.
University of Massachusetts Amherst: A public research university in Amherst, Massachusetts. Its astronomy group led the survey’s scientific and operational development.
Digitized Sky Survey: A collection of digitized photographic sky surveys covering much of the celestial sphere. Unlike its photographic predecessors, 2MASS mapped the sky with digital near-infrared detectors.
H band: A near-infrared photometric band centered near 1.65 micrometers. 2MASS measured sources in H to distinguish their infrared colors and brightnesses.
2MASS Extended Source Catalog: A catalog of resolved galaxies and other extended objects detected by 2MASS. Its galaxy entries enabled large statistical studies of the nearby universe.
NASA: The United States government agency responsible for civilian space exploration and aeronautics. NASA supported 2MASS and made its survey data widely available.
Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer: A NASA space telescope that surveyed the sky at mid-infrared wavelengths. WISE extended all-sky infrared mapping to longer wavelengths after 2MASS.
K band: A near-infrared photometric band centered near 2.2 micrometers. This band gives 2MASS its name and helps reveal objects obscured at visible wavelengths.
Near-infrared excess: Infrared emission above that expected from an object's underlying stellar or photospheric spectrum. 2MASS colors help identify circumstellar dust and young stellar objects with excess emission.
