32-bit computing

32-bit computing uses processors whose native word size is 32 bits, shaping instruction execution, integer operations, and addressable memory.

Word (computer architecture): A word is the natural unit of data handled by a processor architecture. A 32-bit processor's word contains 32 bits, setting the scale for many native operations.
64-bit computing: Computing based on processors with a native word size of 64 bits. Its larger registers and address capacity show what changes when the native width doubles.
x86: A family of instruction set architectures that originated with Intel's 16-bit 8086 processor. The 32-bit x86 generation brought the architecture into mainstream personal computing.
4-gigabyte barrier: The practical limit near 4 GiB encountered by systems using 32-bit addresses for byte-addressed memory. It constrained how much memory a conventional 32-bit process could directly address.
32-bit integer: A fixed-width integer represented using 32 binary digits. It shows the range and overflow behavior of arithmetic at the processor's native width.
16-bit computing: Computing based on processors whose native word size is 16 bits. It represents the narrower predecessor of many 32-bit personal-computer architectures.
IA-32: Intel's 32-bit x86 instruction set architecture, also known as i386 or x86-32. IA-32 is a prominent example of a 32-bit architecture with 32-bit registers and addressing modes.
Backward compatibility: The ability of a system to run or support software designed for earlier systems. 32-bit operating systems often preserved support for 16-bit applications during platform transitions.
32-bit address space: An address space represented with 32-bit addresses, containing up to 2³² distinct byte locations. A 32-bit address can identify at most 4 GiB of byte-addressed memory.
Physical Address Extension: A processor feature that lets 32-bit x86 systems address more than 4 GiB of physical memory. It demonstrates that a 32-bit processor's physical-memory ceiling need not equal 4 GiB.
