35 mm film

A photographic film format using a strip about 35 millimeters wide, with perforations along both edges. In still photography, it most commonly produces 24 × 36 mm frames.

135 film: A standardized cartridge film format using 35 mm-wide perforated film for still photography. This is the common cartridge-based implementation of 35 mm film in still cameras.
Motion-picture film: Photographic film designed to record moving images, commonly as a sequence of frames. The 35 mm width originated in motion-picture film before becoming standard in still cameras.
35 mm SLR camera: A single-lens reflex camera designed to expose 35 mm still film. Interchangeable lenses and through-the-lens viewing made this a major 35 mm camera type.
APS film: A compact photographic film system introduced in the 1990s, using a narrower film strip than 35 mm. APS reduced camera size but offered smaller image frames than standard 35 mm film.
35 mm film frame: A single image area exposed on 35 mm film, usually measuring 24 × 36 mm in still cameras. The standard still-camera frame determines the format’s image dimensions.
William Kennedy Dickson: A Scottish inventor who developed early motion-picture technologies while working for Thomas Edison. Dickson helped establish the 35 mm film width for the Kinetograph system.
Rangefinder camera: A camera that focuses using a separate optical rangefinder rather than viewing through the taking lens. Compact 35 mm rangefinders became a prominent alternative to SLR cameras.
Medium format: Photographic formats using film larger than 35 mm but smaller than large-format sheet film. Its larger negatives trade portability and frame count for increased image area.
Film perforations: Holes along the edges of motion-picture or still-camera film that engage transport mechanisms. Perforations let cameras advance and position the film consistently.
Edison Manufacturing Company: An American company that produced films and motion-picture equipment associated with Thomas Edison. Its early camera and film practices helped fix 35 mm as a cinema gauge.
