8th Dalai Lama

Jamphel Gyatso (1758–1804) was the eighth person recognized as the Dalai Lama and served as Tibet’s spiritual and temporal leader.

Jamphel Gyatso: Jamphel Gyatso was the personal name of the 8th Dalai Lama, who lived from 1758 to 1804. This is the name by which the eighth Dalai Lama is known in accounts of his life.
Tsemonling Regent: Tsemonling Regent was a Tibetan religious and political leader who governed Tibet during the 8th Dalai Lama’s youth. He administered government while Jamphel Gyatso was too young to rule directly.
Ganden Phodrang: Ganden Phodrang was the Tibetan government established by the 5th Dalai Lama in the seventeenth century. It was the government under which Jamphel Gyatso held Tibet’s temporal office.
Golden Urn: The Golden Urn was a Qing-era device used to select certain high Tibetan Buddhist reincarnations by lot. After the Gurkha conflict, Qing authorities promoted it as a means of regulating future reincarnation selections.
Dalai Lama: The Dalai Lama is the title of a lineage of Tibetan Buddhist leaders associated with the Gelug school. Jamphel Gyatso’s recognition continued this lineage and its religious authority.
Qianlong Emperor: The Qianlong Emperor ruled the Qing dynasty from 1735 to 1796. Qing imperial policy influenced Tibet’s political environment during Jamphel Gyatso’s life.
Tibetan regent: A Tibetan regent is an official who governs on behalf of a Dalai Lama unable to rule directly. Regents exercised much of the administration during his childhood and later years.
29-Article Ordinance: The 29-Article Ordinance of 1793 was a Qing regulation for governing Tibet and reforming its administration. It followed the invasion during Jamphel Gyatso’s rule and sought stronger Qing oversight.
Tulku: A tulku is a Tibetan Buddhist teacher recognized as the reincarnation of a predecessor. His status as the Dalai Lama depended on recognition as the previous Dalai Lama’s reincarnation.
Gurkha invasion of Tibet: The Gurkha invasion of Tibet was a conflict in 1788–1792 between Nepalese forces and Tibet, with Qing intervention. The invasion unfolded during his rule and prompted Qing military intervention.
