A. J. Ayer

A. J. Ayer was a British philosopher who defended logical positivism and made its ideas widely known through his 1936 book Language, Truth and Logic.

Logical positivism: A philosophical movement holding that meaningful factual claims are empirically verifiable or analytically true. Ayer’s best-known work introduced this movement’s ideas to a broad English-speaking audience.
Emotivism: The metaethical view that moral judgments express attitudes rather than report objective facts. Ayer’s account of ethical language became an influential version of this position.
Karl Popper: An Austrian-British philosopher of science who proposed falsifiability as a criterion for scientific theories. Popper’s falsifiability criterion challenged verification as a boundary between science and non-science.
Rudolf Carnap: A German-born philosopher and leading member of the Vienna Circle who developed logical empiricism. Carnap’s work was a major source for Ayer’s presentation of logical positivism.

Analytic–synthetic distinction: The distinction between truths based on meanings or logic and claims dependent on how the world is. Ayer treated analytic truths as meaningful without empirical verification.
Religious language: Language used to express, describe, or discuss religious beliefs and realities. Ayer argued that claims about God fail his test for factual significance.
