A-value

A-value is the total DNA content of a haploid genome, used to describe genome size. It provides a measure of DNA quantity, not the number of genes or the organism’s biological complexity.

Genome: The complete set of genetic material in an organism, cell, or virus. A-value quantifies the DNA in a haploid genome.
DNA content: The amount of DNA in a cell, nucleus, or genome, often measured by mass or sequence length. A-value is specifically the DNA content of one haploid genome.
C-value paradox: The observation that genome size does not consistently track organismal complexity. A-value quantifies DNA, while the paradox concerns what genome size fails to predict.
C-value enigma: The unresolved problem of explaining the wide variation in genome sizes among eukaryotes. Comparisons of haploid DNA content expose the variation this enigma seeks to explain.
Haploid: Having one complete set of chromosomes. The haploid state defines the chromosome complement whose DNA content A-value measures.
Ploidy: The number of complete chromosome sets in a cell or organism. Measurements from cells with multiple chromosome sets must be interpreted to infer haploid content.
Gene number: The count of distinct genes encoded by a genome. A larger A-value does not necessarily mean more genes.
