Abacha regime

Nigeria’s military government led by General Sani Abacha from 1993 until his death in 1998. It suppressed political opposition while concentrating power and public wealth in the presidency.

Sani Abacha: Nigerian army officer who ruled Nigeria as head of state from 1993 until his death in 1998. As head of state, Abacha controlled the regime’s appointments, security apparatus, and political direction.
Ken Saro-Wiwa: Nigerian writer and environmental activist executed by the military government in 1995. His execution became the best-known case of the regime’s repression and triggered international condemnation.
