Abadan Refinery

The Abadan Refinery is an Iranian oil refinery on Abadan Island, established by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in the early twentieth century. It became one of the world’s largest refineries and a focal point of Iran’s oil industry.

Anglo-Persian Oil Company: A British oil company founded in 1909 to develop oil resources in Persia, later renamed the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. It built and operated the refinery after striking oil in southwestern Persia.
Oil refining: The industrial separation and conversion of crude oil into fuels and other petroleum products. The refinery’s central task was processing crude into marketable products.
Mohammad Mosaddegh: An Iranian prime minister who led the nationalization of Iran’s oil industry in 1951. His government took control of the refinery during the nationalization crisis.
Iranian oil nationalization: Iran’s 1951 transfer of the oil industry from foreign company control to Iranian state ownership. Abadan was the largest industrial prize and a central site of the takeover.
Iran–Iraq War: A war between Iran and Iraq from 1980 to 1988, marked by extensive fighting along their shared border. Iraqi attacks repeatedly struck Abadan and its oil infrastructure.
William Knox D'Arcy: A British investor whose oil concession led to the first commercially significant oil discovery in Persia. His concession and the 1908 discovery enabled the refinery’s creation.
Crude oil: A naturally occurring liquid mixture of hydrocarbons extracted from underground reservoirs. It was the feedstock transported to Abadan for processing.
Reza Shah: Iran’s ruler from 1925 to 1941, who pursued state centralization and industrial development. His government renegotiated the oil concession that governed the company’s operations.
Abadan Crisis: The 1951–1954 confrontation over Iran’s oil nationalization, involving Britain, Iran, and international mediation. The refinery’s shutdown and contested control became the crisis’s defining flashpoint.
Siege of Abadan: The 1980–1981 Iraqi encirclement and assault on the Iranian city of Abadan during the Iran–Iraq War. The siege left the refinery near the front line and interrupted its operations.
