Knowra Abbas the Great Abbas the Great Abbas I was the fifth Safavid shah of Iran, ruling from 1588 to 1629. He strengthened royal authority, reorganized the army, and made Isfahan a major political and commercial center.
Qizilbash : A confederation of Turkic tribal groups whose warriors formed the early Safavid military elite. Abbas reduced their political leverage by building forces under direct royal control.
Isfahan : A major Iranian city that served as the Safavid capital under Abbas I. Abbas transformed it with new squares, avenues, bridges, and court buildings.
Tahmasp I : The second Safavid shah of Iran, who ruled from 1524 to 1576. His long reign shaped the dynastic and military institutions Abbas later inherited.
Shah Ismail I : The founder of the Safavid dynasty, who ruled Iran from 1501 to 1524. Abbas’s legitimacy rested on the dynasty and Shi‘i monarchy Ismail established.
Ottoman Empire : A major empire centered in Anatolia that ruled parts of southeastern Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. Its wars with the Safavids drove Abbas’s military reconstruction and western campaigns.
Ghulam : A military or administrative servant, often of Caucasian origin, attached to a ruler’s household. Abbas expanded ghulam regiments to counterbalance Qizilbash power.
Naqsh-e Jahan Square : A monumental public square in Isfahan, built under Safavid rule. Its mosques, palace, and bazaar embodied Abbas’s political and urban ambitions.
Ismail II : The Safavid shah who ruled briefly from 1576 to 1577. His turbulent accession and rule preceded the instability that continued under Abbas’s father.
Allahverdi Khan : A Safavid military commander and governor of Fars who rose from the ghulam corps. His career illustrates how Abbas’s trusted ghulams gained high command.
Mughal Empire : A South Asian empire founded in 1526 and ruled by a dynasty of Turco-Mongol origin. It was a powerful eastern neighbor with which Abbas negotiated over Kandahar.
