Abbey

An abbey is a Christian monastic community governed by an abbot or abbess, or the church and buildings associated with that community.

Abbot: A senior monastic superior who governs an abbey of monks. The abbot leads the male community and holds authority over its abbey.
Rule of Saint Benedict: A sixth-century monastic rule prescribing communal life, prayer, work, and obedience. Many Western abbeys organized their routines and discipline around this rule.
Egyptian monasticism: Early Christian monastic traditions that developed in Egypt from the third century onward. Egyptian ascetic communities helped shape the ideals later adopted by Western abbeys.
Pilgrimage: A journey to a place regarded as sacred for religious reasons. Relics and shrines made some abbeys major destinations for pilgrims.

Cathedral chapter: The body of clergy responsible for worship and administration at a cathedral. A cathedral chapter governs cathedral clergy, unlike an abbot or abbess governing a monastic community.
