Abd al-Mu'min

Abd al-Mu'min was the first caliph of the Almohad dynasty, ruling from 1133 to 1163. He expanded Almohad authority across the Maghreb and into al-Andalus.

Almohad movement: A religious and political movement founded by Ibn Tumart that established the Almohad empire in the 12th century. It supplied the movement Abd al-Mu'min inherited and transformed into an empire.
Almohad Caliphate: A North African and Iberian empire ruled by Almohad caliphs from the 12th to the 13th century. Abd al-Mu'min founded this empire and established its caliphal government.
Battle of Alarcos: A 1195 battle in which Almohad forces defeated the army of Alfonso VIII of Castile. Fought after his death, this victory extended the military momentum of the state he built.
Abd al-Mu'min's succession: The transfer of Almohad leadership from Abd al-Mu'min to his son Abu Yaqub Yusuf in 1163. His choice of his son as successor made dynastic inheritance central to Almohad rule.
