Abd al-Rahman I

An Umayyad prince who escaped the Abbasid overthrow of his dynasty and founded the Emirate of Córdoba in 756, ruling until 788.

Umayyad Caliphate: A caliphate ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 661 to 750, with a later branch ruling in Córdoba. Abd al-Rahman belonged to its ruling family before the Abbasid revolution drove him west.
Battle of Musarah: The 756 battle near Córdoba in which Abd al-Rahman I defeated Yusuf al-Fihri's forces. This victory secured Córdoba and enabled Abd al-Rahman to establish his emirate.
Hisham I: The son of Abd al-Rahman I who succeeded him as emir of Córdoba in 788. His succession continued the dynasty Abd al-Rahman established in Iberia.
Abd al-Malik ibn Qatan al-Fihri: An Arab leader who governed al-Andalus before Yusuf al-Fihri and was killed during the upheavals of the 740s. His turbulent rule preceded the factions Abd al-Rahman faced on arriving in Iberia.
Abbasid Revolution: The movement that overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate and established Abbasid rule in 750. Its victory made Abd al-Rahman a fugitive and ended Umayyad power in the east.
Emirate of Córdoba: An independent Umayyad-ruled state in al-Andalus founded by Abd al-Rahman I in 756. It was the polity Abd al-Rahman created and governed for more than three decades.
Al-Hakam I: The third Umayyad emir of Córdoba, ruling from 796 to 822. His reign shows the survival of Abd al-Rahman's state beyond its founding generation.
