Abd al-Samad

Abd al-Samad was a Persian-born painter who served the Mughal emperors Humayun and Akbar. He helped establish the Mughal imperial atelier and shape its early painting style.

Humayun: The second Mughal emperor, who ruled from 1530 to 1540 and again from 1555 to 1556. Humayun brought Abd al-Samad from Persia into the Mughal court.
Hamzanama: An illustrated Mughal manuscript recounting the adventures of Amir Hamza, commissioned under Akbar. Abd al-Samad helped direct this landmark project for the imperial atelier.
Persian miniature: A tradition of small-scale painting developed in Persianate manuscript and court culture. Its techniques and conventions shaped Abd al-Samad’s training before Mughal service.
Mughal imperial atelier: The organized workshop of artists and craftspeople who produced illustrated manuscripts and other works for Mughal rulers. Abd al-Samad helped establish this workshop as a center of imperial production.
Akbar: The third Mughal emperor, whose reign from 1556 to 1605 expanded and consolidated the empire. Akbar continued Abd al-Samad’s service and developed the imperial atelier.

Khamsa of Nizami: A collection of five narrative poems by the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, often copied and illustrated. Its Mughal manuscript tradition reveals the Persian literary and visual heritage Abd al-Samad brought to court.
