Abdallah ibn Yasin

Abdallah ibn Yasin was an 11th-century Muslim preacher who founded the Almoravid movement among Sanhaja Berber communities in the western Sahara. He led its religious and military organization until his death around 1059.

Yahya ibn Umar: A Sanhaja leader who became the Almoravids’ first major military commander. Ibn Yasin’s partnership with Yahya joined religious authority to Sanhaja leadership.
Almoravids: A Berber Muslim dynasty and movement that ruled parts of North Africa and al-Andalus in the 11th and 12th centuries. This is the movement Ibn Yasin organized and led in its formative period.

Abu Bakr ibn Umar: An Almoravid leader who succeeded Yahya ibn Umar and expanded the movement’s power. He continued the political and military project after Ibn Yasin’s death.
Sanhaja: A confederation of Berber peoples historically active across the western Sahara and Maghreb. Ibn Yasin built his following among Sanhaja groups, especially the Gudala and Lamtuna.
