Abdication

Abdication is a monarch’s formal surrender of the throne. It ends or transfers the monarch’s authority according to the succession rules and circumstances involved.

Edward VIII abdication crisis: The 1936 British constitutional crisis that ended with Edward VIII giving up the throne to marry Wallis Simpson. A modern abdication transformed a private marriage decision into a constitutional crisis.
Order of succession: The rules that determine who inherits a hereditary office or throne. Succession rules identify who can assume the throne after an abdication.
Deposition: The forced removal of a ruler or officeholder from power. Deposition removes a monarch against their will; abdication is formally the monarch’s own surrender.
Monarchy: A system of government headed by a hereditary or otherwise designated sovereign. Abdication changes who occupies the central office of a monarchy.
Napoleon Bonaparte’s abdications: Napoleon’s surrenders of the French imperial throne in 1814 and 1815. His repeated departures show how military defeat could force abdication without securing lasting political settlement.
Regency: A system in which a regent governs temporarily while the monarch remains sovereign but cannot rule. Unlike abdication, a regency preserves the monarch’s title and authority in law.
Assassination: The deliberate killing of a prominent person for political or ideological reasons. Assassination ends a reign through death, not through a formal surrender of the throne.
Dynastic succession: The transfer of hereditary rule within a royal family or dynasty. An abdication can redirect dynastic succession by advancing an heir or disqualifying a claimant.
Queen Christina of Sweden: The Swedish monarch who abdicated in 1654, converted to Catholicism, and settled in Rome. Her voluntary departure joined dynastic succession to a personal break with Lutheran Sweden.
Constitutional monarchy: A monarchy in which the sovereign’s powers are limited by constitutional rules and institutions. In constitutional monarchies, abdication can require formal acts by legislatures or governments.
