Abduction

Abduction is inference to the best explanation of observed evidence. It proposes hypotheses that, if true, would make the evidence expected.

Inference to the Best Explanation: A reasoning approach that favors the hypothesis offering the strongest explanation of available evidence. This formulation makes explanatory power the main criterion for abductive choice.
Evidence: Information that supports or challenges a claim, hypothesis, or conclusion. Abduction starts from evidence whose features call for explanation.
Scientific Method: A systematic approach to developing and testing explanations through observation, hypothesis, and experiment. Abduction supplies candidate explanations that scientific inquiry can test.
Charles Sanders Peirce: An American philosopher and logician who developed abduction as a distinct form of inference. Peirce introduced abduction as the formation of explanatory hypotheses.
No Free Lunch Theorem: A family of results showing that no learning algorithm outperforms all others across every possible problem without assumptions. Choosing the best explanation requires assumptions about which hypotheses and evidence matter.
Deduction: Inference in which a conclusion follows necessarily from premises if the inference is valid. Unlike deduction, abduction proposes a conclusion that the evidence does not guarantee.
Causal Inference: Methods for determining whether and how one event or condition causes another. Many abductive explanations propose an unobserved cause for observed effects.
Medical Diagnosis: The process of identifying a disease or condition from symptoms, examination, and test results. Clinicians infer possible conditions that best explain a patient's observed signs.
Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose writings shaped logic, science, and metaphysics. Aristotle's account of reasoning from signs includes an early form of explanatory inference.
Confirmation Theory: The philosophical study of how evidence supports or weakens hypotheses. It investigates when observed evidence genuinely favors one abductive explanation over another.
