Abductive reasoning

Abductive reasoning infers a hypothesis that would explain observed facts. Unlike deduction, it does not guarantee its conclusion; the hypothesis is judged by its explanatory power and fit with evidence.

Explanatory power: The extent to which a theory accounts for observed facts and relevant patterns. Abductive reasoning favors hypotheses that explain more of the evidence.
Deductive reasoning: Reasoning in which a conclusion follows necessarily from premises if the inference is valid. Abduction proposes a possible explanation; deduction guarantees a conclusion from premises.
Charles Sanders Peirce: An American philosopher and logician who developed abduction as a distinct form of inference. Peirce introduced the term and treated abduction as the source of explanatory hypotheses.
Differential diagnosis: The process of distinguishing among diseases that could account for a patient's signs and symptoms. Clinicians use symptoms to propose and compare possible underlying causes.
Inference to the best explanation: A form of reasoning that selects the hypothesis offering the strongest explanation of available evidence. It is often treated as equivalent to abduction, though some accounts distinguish the terms.
Bayesian inference: A method for updating probabilities of hypotheses in light of evidence using Bayes's theorem. Bayesian models show how prior plausibility and evidence can jointly shape explanatory judgment.
Inductive reasoning: Reasoning that generalizes from observed cases or patterns to broader claims. Induction extends patterns, while abduction seeks a hypothesis that explains them.
Pragmatism: A philosophical tradition that connects the meaning of ideas with their practical consequences. Peirce situated abductive hypothesis formation within a pragmatic account of inquiry.
Forensic science: The application of scientific methods to questions arising in legal investigations. Investigators infer plausible events from traces that require causal explanation.
Enumerative induction: Reasoning that supports a generalization by counting observed instances of a pattern. It generalizes from repeated cases rather than proposing a cause for an observation.
