Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah

Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah was Kuwait’s ruler from 1950 until his death in 1965. His reign saw Kuwait gain independence and adopt its constitution.

Independence of Kuwait: Kuwait became a sovereign state on 19 June 1961, ending its treaty relationship with Britain. Abdullah declared independence and negotiated the end of British protection.
Al-Sabah dynasty: The ruling family of Kuwait since the eighteenth century. Abdullah inherited authority within the dynasty that had governed Kuwait for generations.
Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah: Kuwait’s emir from 1977 to 2006 and a son of Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah. Jaber was Abdullah’s son and later continued the family’s rule.
Operation Vantage: A British military deployment to Kuwait in 1961 after Iraq threatened to annex the newly independent country. Abdullah requested British assistance to deter Iraq after declaring independence.
Constitution of Kuwait: Kuwait’s 1962 constitution establishes its political institutions, civil rights, and system of government. Abdullah approved the constitution adopted during his reign.
Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah: Kuwait’s ruler from 1921 to 1950 and Abdullah’s predecessor. Ahmad’s death in 1950 brought Abdullah to the throne.
Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah: Kuwait’s emir from 1965 to 1977 and Abdullah’s half-brother. Sabah succeeded Abdullah and inherited the state institutions established during his reign.
Kuwait Constituent Assembly: The elected assembly that drafted Kuwait’s 1962 constitution. Abdullah convened the body that produced the constitutional settlement.
National Assembly of Kuwait: Kuwait’s elected legislature, established under the 1962 constitution. The constitutional order formed under Abdullah created the Assembly.
Kuwait Oil Company: An oil company established by British and American interests that began commercial production in Kuwait in 1946. Oil revenues expanded sharply during Abdullah’s reign, changing the resources available to the state.
