Abe Saperstein

Abe Saperstein (1902–1966) was an American basketball promoter and coach who founded the Harlem Globetrotters and built them into an internationally known touring team.

Harlem Globetrotters: An American exhibition basketball team founded in 1926, known for combining athletic play with comedy and showmanship. Saperstein founded and managed the team that became the center of his career.
Basketball barnstorming: A touring style of sports promotion in which teams travel widely to play exhibition games, often outside established leagues. Saperstein used barnstorming to bring the Globetrotters to audiences across the United States and abroad.
1948 Globetrotters–Lakers game: A Chicago exhibition game in which the Harlem Globetrotters defeated the Minneapolis Lakers, then a leading professional team. The upset established the Globetrotters as a serious basketball team as well as an entertainment act.
Sports promotion: The organization and publicity of sporting events to attract participants, audiences, and commercial support. Saperstein’s work joined team management to publicity and event-making.
New York Renaissance: A successful all-Black professional basketball team based in New York that competed from 1923 to 1949. The Rens were a major Black rival whose competitive tradition differed from the Globetrotters’ growing emphasis on showmanship.
Nat Clifton: An American basketball player who joined the New York Knicks in 1950, becoming one of the first Black players in the NBA. Saperstein signed Clifton to the Globetrotters before Clifton entered the NBA.
Black Fives era: The period of Black basketball leagues and teams before the NBA integrated in 1950. Saperstein’s team grew from the segregated Black basketball world of the 1920s and 1930s.
1951 Globetrotters European tour: A postwar tour in which the Harlem Globetrotters played before large crowds across Europe. Saperstein’s overseas touring helped make the team internationally famous.
Basketball exhibition game: A basketball contest staged primarily for entertainment or demonstration rather than league standings. Exhibition games let Saperstein book the Globetrotters beyond regular league schedules.
Minneapolis Lakers: A professional basketball team that played in Minneapolis from 1947 to 1960 before moving to Los Angeles. The Lakers represented elite league competition against which Saperstein’s team proved its ability.
