Abel Tasman

Abel Tasman was a Dutch navigator who led the first documented European expeditions to Tasmania and New Zealand in 1642–1643.

Tasman’s 1642–1643 voyage: A Dutch East India Company expedition that explored Tasmania, New Zealand, and nearby Pacific islands. This was Tasman’s landmark expedition and the first documented European voyage to reach New Zealand.
Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered company that held a monopoly on Dutch trade with Asia from 1602 to 1799. The company commissioned Tasman’s expeditions to explore routes and lands east of its Asian headquarters.
