Abhidhamma Piṭaka

The third division of the Theravāda Pāli Canon, presenting systematic analyses of Buddhist teachings, mental phenomena, and materiality.

Pāli Canon: The collection of scriptures preserved in the Pāli language by Theravāda Buddhists. The Abhidhamma Piṭaka is one of its three major divisions.
Dhammasaṅgaṇī: The first book of the Theravāda Abhidhamma Piṭaka, classifying dhammas and states of consciousness. It opens the collection with systematic enumerations of mental and material phenomena.
Theravāda: A Buddhist tradition whose canonical scriptures are preserved primarily in Pāli. The Abhidhamma Piṭaka belongs specifically to the Theravāda canonical collection.
Visuddhimagga: A fifth-century Theravāda compendium by Buddhaghosa on ethics, meditation, and wisdom. It draws on Abhidhamma categories to describe the path and analyze experience.
Sanskrit Abhidharma: The doctrinal analyses of Buddhist schools preserved in Sanskrit or related languages. These traditions share analytical aims with the Pāli collection but differ in texts and doctrines.
Dhamma theory: A Theravāda framework that analyzes experience into basic phenomena called dhammas. The texts organize mental and material experience through classifications of dhammas.
Vibhaṅga: The second book of the Theravāda Abhidhamma Piṭaka, analyzing doctrinal topics through classifications. Its topic-by-topic analyses show how the collection dissects major Buddhist teachings.
Pāli: A Middle Indo-Aryan language in which the Theravāda Buddhist canon is preserved. The Abhidhamma Piṭaka survives as part of the Pāli-language canon.
Vipassanā: A Buddhist meditation practice that cultivates insight into experience and its characteristics. Some Theravāda insight traditions use Abhidhamma analysis to frame meditation practice.
Sarvāstivāda Abhidharma: The analytical Buddhist literature of the Sarvāstivāda school, including works preserved in Chinese translation. Its distinct taxonomy and philosophical positions offer a major comparison with Theravāda Abhidhamma.
