Abietic acid

Abietic acid is a naturally occurring diterpene resin acid found in conifer resins and a major component of rosin. Its oxidizable structure influences the properties and aging of resin-based materials.

Rosin: Rosin is the solid resin left after volatile turpentine is distilled from conifer oleoresin. Abietic acid is one of rosin’s principal resin acids.
Abietic acid oxidation: Abietic acid oxidation comprises reactions that transform its unsaturated diterpene structure in air or with oxidants. Air exposure changes abietic acid and contributes to rosin’s aging.
Rosin soap: Rosin soap is a water-soluble mixture of alkali-metal salts of rosin acids. Abietic acid contributes to the resin-acid salts used in rosin soap.
