Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1976

An Australian federal law that established a process for Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory to claim traditional land and created institutions to support land rights.

Traditional land claim: A claim under the Act seeking recognition of Aboriginal traditional ownership of unalienated land in the Northern Territory. Claims are the Act’s central route for recognizing traditional ownership.
Wave Hill walk-off: A 1966 strike by Gurindji workers at Wave Hill Station that became a campaign for land and political recognition. The walk-off helped build the national movement that preceded the Act.
