Abraham Gottlob Werner

Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749–1817) was a German geologist and mineralogist who taught at the Freiberg Mining Academy and advanced Neptunism, a theory that rocks formed from water.

James Hutton: James Hutton was a Scottish geologist whose ideas about gradual geological processes helped establish uniformitarianism. Hutton’s plutonist account of rock formation opposed Werner’s water-based theory.
Wernerian stratigraphy: Wernerian stratigraphy is a historical system that orders rock formations by their relative age and mode of origin. Werner arranged formations into a sequence he interpreted as deposits from a diminishing ocean.

Alexander von Humboldt: Alexander von Humboldt was a Prussian naturalist and explorer who made major contributions to geology and physical geography. Humboldt studied under Werner at Freiberg before developing a broader, empirical approach to nature.
Primitive ocean: The primitive ocean is a historical geological hypothesis in which Earth’s earliest surface was covered by a global body of water. Werner used a primordial ocean to explain how many rocks and mineral deposits formed.
