Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States, leading the Union through the Civil War and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation. His presidency preserved the Union and helped bring about the abolition of slavery.

Emancipation Proclamation: An 1863 presidential order declaring enslaved people free in areas still in rebellion against the United States. Lincoln issued it as a wartime measure that made emancipation a Union objective.
American Civil War: The 1861–1865 armed conflict between the United States and the Confederacy over secession and slavery. Lincoln directed the Union government and military through this defining crisis.
