Absolute electrode potential

An electrode’s electric potential measured relative to the vacuum level rather than to a reference electrode. It places electrode potentials on a common scale independent of a chosen electrochemical reference.

Electrode potential: The potential difference between an electrode and the solution with which it is in contact. Absolute electrode potential is the vacuum-referenced form of this interfacial quantity.
Standard hydrogen electrode: A reference electrode assigned a standard potential of zero volts under specified conditions. Its conventional zero is relative, unlike the vacuum reference used for absolute potentials.
Band alignment: The relative positions of electronic energy bands across materials or interfaces. Absolute electrode potentials can be compared with semiconductor band edges on a shared energy scale.
Standard electrode potential: The potential of a redox electrode under standard conditions, reported relative to a reference electrode. It is conventionally relative to the standard hydrogen electrode rather than to vacuum.
Absolute potential of the standard hydrogen electrode: The vacuum-referenced potential assigned to the standard hydrogen electrode through theoretical and experimental estimates. Its value anchors conversions between the conventional electrochemical scale and absolute potentials.
Electrochemical potential: The chemical potential of a charged species including its electrical potential energy. It links the energy of electrons in an electrode to the electrochemical potential scale.
Electrochemical series: A ranking of redox couples by their standard electrode potentials. Absolute potentials can place the series on a vacuum-referenced energy scale.
Flatband potential: The electrode potential at which a semiconductor’s bands are unbent at its interface. Vacuum referencing helps compare this electrochemical quantity with semiconductor energy levels.
Reference electrode: An electrode with a stable, known potential used to measure other electrode potentials. Reference electrodes define practical relative scales, whereas absolute potentials use vacuum.
Solvation energy: The energy change when a species is transferred from vacuum into a solvent. Uncertainty in ionic solvation energies affects estimates connecting vacuum and solution reference levels.
