Absolute space and time

The Newtonian view that space and time exist independently of matter and events, providing fixed backgrounds against which motion and duration are measured.

Newton's laws of motion: Three laws describing how forces affect bodies’ motion, formulated by Isaac Newton in the Principia. They express motion within Newton’s framework of absolute space and time.
Isaac Newton: English mathematician and physicist who formulated classical mechanics and universal gravitation. Newton gave the clearest systematic defense of absolute space and time.
Relational space: The view that spatial facts consist in relations among material objects rather than an independent container. It rejects the independent spatial stage that absolute space posits.
Absolute simultaneity: The Newtonian principle that whether two events occur at the same time is independent of an observer’s motion. It follows from treating time as universal and independent of physical events.
Absolute motion: Motion measured relative to absolute space rather than inferred solely from relations among bodies. It is the motion Newton distinguished from motion relative to nearby objects.
Principia Mathematica: Isaac Newton’s 1687 work presenting the laws of motion and universal gravitation. Its opening definitions distinguish absolute space and time from their measured counterparts.
Relational time: The view that time consists in relations among events or changes rather than an independently flowing background. It opposes Newton’s claim that time flows uniformly without reference to events.
Galilean transformation: The equations relating space and time coordinates measured in uniformly moving Newtonian reference frames. They preserve Newtonian absolute time while changing spatial coordinates between frames.
Newton's bucket argument: Newton’s rotating-water thought experiment, used to argue that rotation is measured relative to absolute space. The changing water surface is meant to reveal rotation beyond relative motion.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz: German philosopher and mathematician who argued that space and time are relations among things and events. Leibniz directly opposed Newton’s claim that space and time exist independently.
