Absolute

The quality of being complete, unrestricted, or independent of conditions, relations, or comparison. Its meaning varies across philosophy, mathematics, and ordinary usage.

Absolute (philosophy): A philosophical idea of reality or truth existing independently of anything else. It gives the concept its strongest metaphysical sense: what depends on nothing beyond itself.
Relativism: The view that truth, knowledge, or moral standards depend on a framework or perspective. Relativism denies that standards are always independent of context.
Condition (philosophy): A circumstance or requirement on which the existence or validity of something depends. An absolute is characterized partly by not depending on such requirements.
Absolute value: A number’s nonnegative magnitude, equal to its distance from zero on the number line. In mathematics, absolute removes the sign and retains magnitude.
Absolutism: A political doctrine that concentrates sovereign power in a ruler or governing authority. Political absolutism applies unrestrictedness to the exercise of state power.
Contingency: The condition of being possible but not necessary, and therefore dependent on how things happen to be. Contingent facts could have been otherwise; absolute claims often imply necessity.
Relation (philosophy): A connection between entities in which each is considered in relation to another. Independence from relations is one prominent meaning of the absolute.
Absolute temperature: Temperature measured from absolute zero, commonly expressed in kelvins. This scale begins at a physical lower bound rather than an arbitrary reference point.
Moral absolutism: The view that some moral rules apply universally, regardless of circumstances or consequences. It makes moral judgment independent of situational exceptions.
Universality: The property of applying to all members of a domain or across relevant contexts. A universal claim may cover every case without being independent of all conditions.
