Abu Bakr

Abu Bakr was a close companion of Muhammad and the first caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate, ruling from 632 to 634. His brief reign secured the nascent Muslim community after Muhammad’s death.

Ridda Wars: A series of campaigns by the early caliphate against Arabian tribes that withdrew allegiance or rejected its authority after Muhammad’s death. Abu Bakr’s decision to fight these rebellions consolidated caliphal authority across Arabia.
Muhammad: The religious and political leader who founded Islam and is regarded by Muslims as its final prophet. Abu Bakr was Muhammad’s close companion and father-in-law, and succeeded him as leader of the community.

Saqifah: The meeting at the Saqifah of Banu Sa'idah in Medina where leading Muslims debated succession after Muhammad’s death. Abu Bakr was selected as leader following debate at this gathering.
Shia Islam: A branch of Islam that holds Ali and his descendants had the strongest claim to leadership of the Muslim community. Shia accounts generally contest Abu Bakr’s succession in favor of Ali’s prior claim.
Battle of Yamama: A major battle of the Ridda Wars in which Muslim forces defeated followers of the claimant Musaylima. Heavy Muslim losses at Yamama prompted concern about preserving Quranic recitations.
Aisha: A wife of Muhammad and a major transmitter of hadith in early Islam; she was Abu Bakr’s daughter. Her family connection to Muhammad strengthened Abu Bakr’s place within the early Muslim community.
