Emirate of Abu Dhabi

The largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates by area, occupying much of the country’s territory and governed from Abu Dhabi city.

Abu Dhabi Executive Council: The Abu Dhabi government body that coordinates public policy and supervises government departments. It directs the emirate’s departments under the authority of its ruler.
Trucial States: A group of sheikhdoms on the southern Persian Gulf coast under British treaty relationships before 1971. Abu Dhabi was one of these sheikhdoms before the UAE formed.
Abu Dhabi city: The capital city of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. It is the emirate’s seat of government and largest urban center.
Abu Dhabi Investment Authority: A sovereign wealth fund established by the government of Abu Dhabi to invest public funds globally. It invests a portion of the wealth generated by the emirate’s public resources.

Treaty of 1892: An agreement by which Trucial rulers undertook not to enter foreign agreements without British consent. It shaped the external relations of Abu Dhabi before independence.
Al Ain: An inland city in eastern Abu Dhabi emirate, near the border with Oman. It anchors the emirate’s eastern region and oasis heritage.
Masdar City: A planned urban development in Abu Dhabi focused on clean technology and sustainable design. It expresses efforts to build economic sectors beyond hydrocarbons.
Emirate of Sharjah: A UAE emirate with territory on both the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Sharjah’s distinct geography and cultural profile contrast with Abu Dhabi’s vast western reach.
