Abu Muslim

Abu Muslim was an Iranian-born revolutionary who led the Abbasid movement in Khurasan and helped overthrow the Umayyad caliphate in 750. His rise and violent death made him a contested figure in Islamic history.

Abbasid Revolution: The uprising that overthrew the Umayyad caliphate and established Abbasid rule in 750. Abu Muslim organized its decisive eastern front and helped bring the uprising to victory.
Abbasid family: The Quraysh clan that claimed descent from al-Abbas, an uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, and founded the Abbasid caliphate. Its claim to leadership supplied the dynastic cause Abu Muslim advanced.
Abu al-Abbas al-Saffah: The first Abbasid caliph, who ruled from 750 to 754. He benefited from Abu Muslim’s victory and later ordered the revolutionary leader’s execution.
Sunpadh: An Iranian rebel who led an uprising against the Abbasids after Abu Muslim’s execution. His revolt sought vengeance for Abu Muslim and drew on the dead leader’s popular authority.

Khurasan: A historical region of Central and western Asia, centered broadly on northeastern Iran and adjoining lands. Its diverse population and distance from Damascus gave Abu Muslim’s movement a powerful base.
Ibrahim al-Imam: An Abbasid leader who directed the family’s revolutionary network before his death in 747. Abu Muslim’s leadership in Khurasan advanced the cause Ibrahim had organized.
