Academic discipline

An academic discipline is a distinct branch of knowledge organized around particular subject matter, methods, concepts, and scholarly communities. It is pursued through teaching and research.

Scholarly community: A community of researchers who develop, evaluate, and communicate knowledge within shared practices. Researchers sustain a discipline by debating its questions and standards.
Medieval university: A European institution of higher learning that emerged during the Middle Ages. Its faculties established an early framework for organizing learned subjects.
Academic major: A student's primary field of study in a degree program. Majors translate disciplinary structures into undergraduate study paths.

Academic journal: A periodical that publishes scholarly work, often after editorial review. Journals circulate findings and establish disciplinary conversations.
Research university: A university that integrates advanced research with teaching and graduate education. Its growth strengthened research as a defining disciplinary activity.
