Acaricide

An acaricide is a substance used to kill ticks and mites. It may act on contact, through ingestion, or by disrupting vital biological processes.

Pyrethroids: A class of insecticides that disrupts voltage-gated sodium channels in arthropod nerve cells. These compounds kill ticks and mites by prolonging sodium-channel activity.
Tick control: Methods for reducing tick populations or preventing ticks from attaching to hosts. Acaricides can suppress ticks on animals, in buildings, or in treated habitats.
Repellent: A substance that discourages organisms from approaching or contacting a treated surface or host. Repellents deter ticks or mites rather than necessarily killing them.
Acari: The arachnid group comprising mites and ticks. Acaricides are named for their targets within this group.
Organophosphates: A class of chemicals that inhibits acetylcholinesterase, disrupting nerve signaling. Some acaricides use this nerve-targeting mechanism against mites and ticks.
Miticide: A pesticide used specifically to control mites. The term emphasizes acaricide use against mites, especially in crop protection.
Biological control: The use of living organisms or their products to suppress pest populations. Biological control can reduce ticks or mites without relying on conventional acaricide application.
Ticks: Parasitic arachnids that feed on the blood of vertebrates. Ticks are one of the two principal target groups of acaricides.
Formamidines: A chemical class that includes amitraz, which affects octopamine signaling in arthropods. Amitraz is a formamidine acaricide with a different neural target from many alternatives.
Livestock ectoparasite control: The prevention and treatment of parasites that live on the exterior of farm animals. Acaricides treat ticks and mites that infest livestock and damage animal health or production.
