Accelerationism

Accelerationism is a family of theories that treat intensifying technological or capitalist processes as politically significant. Its strands disagree over whether intensification should be resisted, redirected, or pushed further.

Karl Marx: A nineteenth-century philosopher and political economist whose critique of capitalism shaped socialist thought. Accelerationist readings draw on his account of capitalism as a force that transforms production and social life.
Left accelerationism: A political tendency that seeks to harness technological and economic capacities for emancipatory ends. It treats acceleration as something to organize and redirect rather than simply endure.
Deterritorialization: A process by which established social codes, identities, and boundaries are loosened or displaced. Accelerationist accounts often describe capitalism as dissolving existing limits through this process.
Fully Automated Luxury Communism: A political vision in which automation and public ownership provide abundant goods and reduce necessary labor. It illustrates an emancipatory future imagined through the expansion of productive technology.
Effective accelerationism: An online movement that advocates accelerating technological progress, especially in artificial intelligence. It adapts accelerationist language to contemporary debates about technology and AI development.
Deleuze and Guattari: A French philosophical partnership known for works on desire, capitalism, and social organization. Their account of capitalism's tendency to break limits became a central reference for later accelerationists.
Right accelerationism: A tendency that associates accelerating capitalism and technology with the breakdown of existing social and political order. It represents a starkly different political response from left accelerationist projects.
Capitalist mode of production: An economic system organized around private ownership, wage labor, commodity production, and capital accumulation. Accelerationist arguments examine how its drive to accumulate can intensify technological and social change.
Universal basic income: A policy that provides everyone in a population with regular cash payments without means testing. Some left accelerationist proposals connect income guarantees to automation and reduced dependence on wage labor.
Accelerationism and terrorism: The use of accelerationist ideas by some far-right extremists to justify violence and social destabilization. This association has made distinctions between theoretical traditions and violent appropriation especially consequential.
