Acetamide

Acetamide is the simplest amide derived from acetic acid, with the formula CH₃CONH₂. It consists of an acetyl group bonded to an amino group.

Amide: An amide is a compound containing a carbonyl group bonded to nitrogen. Acetamide is the simplest member of this compound family.
Acetic acid: Acetic acid is a two-carbon carboxylic acid with the formula CH₃COOH. Replacing its hydroxyl group with –NH₂ gives acetamide.
Cellulose acetate: Cellulose acetate is a cellulose-derived polymer whose hydroxyl groups are partly or fully acetylated. Acetamide has been used as a solvent in cellulose acetate manufacture.
N-Methylacetamide: N-Methylacetamide is an acetamide derivative in which one nitrogen-bound hydrogen is replaced by a methyl group. It is a simple model for studying peptide-like amide bonds.
Amide resonance: Amide resonance delocalizes a nitrogen lone pair into a neighboring carbonyl group. This delocalization makes acetamide’s carbon–nitrogen bond partly double and its nitrogen weakly basic.
Acetyl group: The acetyl group is the acyl group CH₃CO–, derived from acetic acid. It forms the carbonyl-containing portion of acetamide.
Acetamide herbicide: Acetamide herbicides are a group of weed-control chemicals built around acetamide-related structures. The acetamide functional group appears in several herbicides, though they are distinct compounds.
Thioacetamide: Thioacetamide is a sulfur analogue of acetamide with the formula CH₃CSNH₂. Replacing oxygen with sulfur changes the carbonyl-like group while retaining the acetyl-derived framework.
Hydrogen bond: A hydrogen bond is an attraction involving a hydrogen attached to an electronegative atom and another electronegative site. Acetamide molecules form intermolecular hydrogen bonds through their N–H groups and carbonyl oxygens.
Carbonyl group: A carbonyl group consists of a carbon atom double-bonded to oxygen. Acetamide’s carbonyl carbon is bonded to both methyl and amino groups.
