Acetone

Acetone is a colorless, volatile organic compound with formula C₃H₆O. It is the simplest ketone and a widely used solvent.

Carbonyl group: A functional group consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to oxygen. Acetone’s central carbonyl group defines its ketone structure and drives much of its reactivity.
Nail polish remover: A liquid formulation used to dissolve and remove nail polish. Acetone dissolves many nail-polish resins, making it a common remover ingredient.
2-Butanone: A volatile ketone with formula C₄H₈O, also known as methyl ethyl ketone. It is a larger ketone solvent with different evaporation and handling properties.

Volatile organic compound: An organic chemical that readily enters the gas phase under ordinary conditions. Acetone’s volatility makes it part of discussions about solvent emissions and indoor air.
Dipole moment: A measure of the separation of positive and negative charge in a molecule. The polar carbonyl bond gives acetone a molecular dipole that helps it dissolve many substances.
Methyl methacrylate: An organic ester used as the monomer for polymethyl methacrylate and related polymers. A commercial route to methyl methacrylate uses acetone cyanohydrin as an intermediate.
