Acetylacetone

Acetylacetone, or pentane-2,4-dione, is a 1,3-diketone that exists in keto and enol forms. Its enolate binds metal ions, making it a widely used chelating ligand.

Keto–enol tautomerism: The interconversion of a carbonyl compound’s keto form and an enol form by proton transfer and bond rearrangement. Acetylacetone readily shifts between these forms, with the enol stabilized by conjugation and an internal hydrogen bond.
Metal acetylacetonates: Coordination compounds in which acetylacetonate ligands bind metal ions through oxygen atoms. These complexes are the direct products of acetylacetone’s chelating action.
Carbonyl group: A functional group consisting of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom. Acetylacetone contains two carbonyl groups whose positions enable tautomerism and chelation.
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid: A polyaminocarboxylate ligand that binds metal ions through multiple nitrogen and oxygen donor atoms. Unlike acetylacetone, it can wrap around a metal with several donor sites and form highly stable complexes.
Enolate: A resonance-stabilized anion formed by removing a proton from a carbon adjacent to a carbonyl group. Deprotonation produces the oxygen-donor form that chelates metal ions.
Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition: A thin-film deposition method that uses volatile metal-containing compounds transported in a vapor phase. Metal acetylacetonates can serve as precursors for depositing metal-containing films.
Conjugation: The overlap of adjacent p orbitals that allows electrons to be delocalized across a connected system. Conjugation stabilizes acetylacetone’s enol form and its metal-bound enolate.
8-Hydroxyquinoline: A heterocyclic compound that coordinates metals through its nitrogen and deprotonated oxygen atoms. It offers an N,O donor pair, whereas acetylacetonate binds through two oxygen atoms.
Chelation: The binding of a metal ion by a ligand through two or more donor atoms, forming one or more rings. Acetylacetone’s two oxygen atoms can bind one metal center together.
Sol-gel process: A materials synthesis method that converts a liquid sol into a solid gel and often an oxide. Acetylacetone can modify metal alkoxides and control their hydrolysis during sol-gel preparation.
