Acetylene

Acetylene, or ethyne, is a colorless hydrocarbon gas with formula C₂H₂. Its carbon atoms are joined by a triple bond, making it the simplest alkyne.

Alkyne: An alkyne is a hydrocarbon containing at least one carbon–carbon triple bond. Acetylene is the simplest member of this hydrocarbon family.
Oxyacetylene welding: Oxyacetylene welding joins metals using heat from a flame produced by burning acetylene in oxygen. It exploits acetylene’s high flame temperature for localized metal heating.
Edmund Davy: Edmund Davy was an Irish chemist who first reported producing acetylene in 1836. His experiments established the early discovery of acetylene from a carbide compound.
Ethylene: Ethylene, or ethene, is a two-carbon hydrocarbon with one carbon–carbon double bond. It has the same number of carbon atoms as acetylene but a different bond and reactivity.
Carbon–carbon triple bond: A covalent bond in which two carbon atoms share three pairs of electrons. This bond gives acetylene its defining structure and characteristic reactions.
Calcium carbide: Calcium carbide is an inorganic compound that reacts with water to produce acetylene gas. It was a major source of acetylene before large-scale hydrocarbon production became common.
Marcellin Berthelot: Marcellin Berthelot was a French chemist who synthesized acetylene from its elements in 1862. His synthesis helped establish acetylene’s identity and chemical composition.
Ethane: Ethane is a saturated hydrocarbon with formula C₂H₆ and a single carbon–carbon bond. Its single bond makes it less unsaturated and generally less reactive than acetylene.
Combustion: Combustion is a chemical reaction in which a fuel reacts with an oxidant, releasing heat and often light. Acetylene burns rapidly in oxygen and can produce an intensely hot flame.
Chemical feedstock: A chemical feedstock is a raw material used to manufacture other chemicals or products. Acetylene serves as a starting material for several industrial chemical syntheses.
