Achaemenid royal road

The Achaemenid royal road was an imperial network of routes connecting Persian administrative centers and provinces, enabling communication, travel, and governance across the empire.

Angarium: The Achaemenid courier service that carried royal messages between imperial centers. Its couriers used the road network to relay orders across the empire.
Cyrus the Great: The founder of the Achaemenid Empire, who ruled Persia from about 559 to 530 BCE. His conquests established the imperial territory that later required connected routes.
Persepolis: An Achaemenid ceremonial capital founded by Darius I in southwestern Iran. Routes connected this royal center to administrative sites and regions across the empire.
Sardis–Susa route: The long-distance route described by Herodotus between Sardis in Anatolia and Susa in Iran. Its staged journey is the clearest surviving illustration of an Achaemenid royal road.
