Aconcagua

Aconcagua is a 6,961-meter mountain in Argentina’s Andes and the highest peak outside Asia. It lies in Aconcagua Provincial Park near the Chilean border.

Normal Route: The standard nontechnical climbing route up Aconcagua via the Horcones Valley. Most climbers use this route to reach the summit without technical climbing.
Andes: A continental mountain range running along the western edge of South America. Aconcagua is a summit in the Andes’ Central volcanic and tectonic belt.
Juan Sebastián Elcano: A Basque mariner who completed the first circumnavigation of Earth after Ferdinand Magellan’s death. Aconcagua’s first recorded summit was made by a member of Elcano’s expedition in 1897.
Cerro Ameghino: A mountain in the Aconcagua massif, named for Argentine naturalist Florentino Ameghino. Its ridges and valleys form part of the terrain surrounding the main summit.
Polish Glacier Route: A high-altitude route approaching Aconcagua’s summit by way of the Polish Glacier. This route offers a more technical alternative to the Normal Route.
South American Plate: The tectonic plate underlying most of South America and the adjacent Atlantic seabed. Its interaction with the Nazca Plate contributes to uplift and volcanism in the Andes.
Matthias Zurbriggen: A Swiss mountain guide who made the first recorded ascent of Aconcagua in 1897. Zurbriggen reached the summit alone during Edward FitzGerald’s expedition.
Horcones Valley: A glacial valley on Aconcagua’s western side and the principal approach to the mountain’s Normal Route. The valley is the main access corridor for climbers entering the park.
Aconcagua Provincial Park: A protected area in Mendoza Province, Argentina, established around Aconcagua and its surrounding ecosystems. The park manages access, permits, and conservation around the mountain.
Nazca Plate: An oceanic tectonic plate beneath the eastern Pacific Ocean, west of South America. Its subduction beneath South America helped build the Andean mountain belt.
