Acoustic communication

Acoustic communication is the exchange of information through sound signals. It occurs when a sender produces sound that changes a receiver’s behavior or understanding.

Sound: Sound is mechanical vibration that propagates through a material medium as pressure waves. Acoustic signals are pressure waves whose properties can encode information.
Frequency: Frequency is the number of cycles of a periodic signal occurring per unit time. Pitch and many species-specific signal features depend on frequency.
Animal communication: Animal communication is the transmission of information among animals through signals that affect receivers. Acoustic signaling is one major channel within animal communication.
Soundscape ecology: Soundscape ecology studies the composition and ecological effects of sounds in a landscape. It connects communication signals with the broader acoustic environment.

Sound propagation: Sound propagation is the movement of acoustic waves through a medium. The medium and distance shape which parts of a signal reach its receiver.
Timbre: Timbre is the quality that distinguishes sounds with the same pitch and loudness. Distinctive timbres can identify a caller or separate signals with similar pitches.
